Hi,
After an engine rebuild I'm having a few problems with the clutch of my KR50. I can't get it adjusted. It won't release properly and doesn't grip well. You can hear the gears rattle when trying to get it into first gear. When it slips into first gear it starts wining constantly so it does grip but slips heavily. It doesn't do this and seems to go trough all the gears quite good with the engine switched off.
If I tighten the clutch adjustment nut the cluch is constantly released and if I loosen the nut it grabs constantly as descibed above. Adjustment on the handlebar makes little difference.
I've found minor wear on the clutch pullrod (kupplungdruckstange), the clutch plates seem a little old and so do the clutch springs.
What's the best way to adjust the clutch? And how often do clutch springs wear out?
Is it possible to replace the clutch pullrod and clutch springs with later types (KR51, SR50 etc.)?
And my last question. A quite silly one. I'm sorry. How are the gears organised? For neutral I have to turn the handlebar control all the way down. 1st is one up en 2nd is two up. Is this correct since the handlebar control says neutral should be in the middle, 1st gear should be down an 2nd all the way up. To me it seems impossible though to mix gears up on reassembly of an engine.
Thanks!
Regards,
Ton

Hallo Ton, it´s possible to use springs from the KR51 it is the same but the pullrod will not fit. You have to adjust the screw at the clutch lever in this way, that there ist a play of 3mm. When the clutch slips during acceleration in every adjustment the springs will be ready to change. When it doesn´t release in no adjustment maybe the disks are poured. Then you have to change these. When it doesn´t slip and release you have to look only after the adjustment clutch. When you have to demount the clutch cap from the engine look at the clutch drum when you see pittings you have to smooth it with a file or by welding. When you don´t do this the clutch will hopping. Thanks, I'll check the clutch drum for dents, order new springs and clutch plates and fix it properly. Thanks for the handshift advise. I've driven and owned handshifted Puchs an Tomosses for years so that won't be a problem....I guess. Boem is ho. Regards, Ton

Goodevening,
I've rebuild the clutch and found the first gear shortly after that. It works just fine now. No dents on the clutch drum by the way and those KR51 clutch springs do the job perfectly.
After a short test drive, 15 minutes ago, the cluch lever on the underside of the engine came out a little. I removed the lid that covers both clutch and gear levers and pushed the lever back in place. It's an easy fix but quite annoying. This is the second time it occurred and I haven't done too many km's on it since it's not registered yet.
I don't know if this is a common problem but how can I prevent this clutch lever from popping out and what's causing this problem?
Thanks!
Regards,
Ton

Hi Tim,
Ah, there's a pin. It must have been gone before we bought the Simson since the lever already came out during one of the first rides before restauration.
Any ideas where I can get a replacement pin or some measurements so I can fabricate something myself?
Thanks a lot!
Kind regards,
Ton

Hi Tim,
Thanks for the advice but yeah wrong answer. I'll need the instructions somewhere in the future for sure though.
I'll check the engine number for you. Where is this number located?

Ton

I tried to locate the engine numer last evening but I couldn't find it. The scooter is parked in a tiny room with other classic mopeds, surfboards and piles of classic car and motorbike parts. Sorry guys. Maybe next weekend. Then I've got some more time to get things organised.
Is it possible to see the engine number with just the engine cover removed? I've seen the number when the engine was out but I can't remember where it was stamped precisely. It was somewhere near the kickstarter like Konstantin said.
Regards,
Ton
