My parts have arrived so that I can now direct fuel towards the inside of the engine rather than on my hands, down my leg, over the outside of the engine and onto the ground!

I have a couple of questions about the base/starting settings for the carburetor.

Which of the four notches on the teillastnadel (fuel needle?) should I use?


Also, how far in should I screw the idle screw? (The upside down diagonal one with a spring on it).

You need the third counted from top. If it is a rebuild needle it could be possible that the run of the engine isn´t optimal.

Die idle -Schraube ca 2,5-3 Umdrehungen rein. Die macht bei dem Vergaser nur den unteren Endanschlag. Sonst nichts!

Yeah, of course. Drew it outside if the motor is running. If you are too wide of screwing outside....the motor goes to modus: " Nothing of fuel, I moag net mehr"

Ok, so tonight I spent about an hour cleaning the carb, fitting new needle, new needle float valve, new jets, new float and new seals. I also fitted a new fuel filler seal, new fuel tap, new fuel line and new fuel filter.

I then spent about the next hour and a half trying to stop the fuel leaking from every possible join!

I fired it up and it sprung into life! I adjusted the idle screw to what sounded like a comfortable speed. I left it idling for a couple of minutes.

Then I took it for a short ride. It rode fine for a few minutes and then suddenly cut out completely. Trying to restart it does nothing at all. No attempt to fire up. This is how it was behaving before I did all of the work to the fuel supply as I thought this was the problem. I'm now thinking that it must be an electrical problem.

Any suggestions? The coil perhaps? The spark plug looks new and I changed the HT lead when I first got the bike (albeit for another old one).

The magneto was still working as the light (only the front one is working at the moment) was still on if I pedalled.

Did you have a spark when it goes out?

I don't know for sure, but I now suspect not.

Please kook if it sparks between the spark plug electrodes !

Tom, this is a 2-stroke-engine!

2-strokes are very sensitiv to running in low rotation with nothing or only a little bit of gas.
The reason why is: we have a very easy carb. The gas (air/benzin) don`t have a high definition over the complete scale of running. In lower scale are more benzin (and also oil) in the gas, the spark will be black (not enough temperatur) an the engine stopps.

Its not possibil to start the engine, running without driver in your garden and yourself are sitting a nd drink your 5-o-clock tea.

The best performance for this engine is full gas!!

In example: If you drive down hill without gas, the motor wants to stop. It is so! He need only one thing: gas!

I will try again tonight and check for a spark if it cuts out.

I was giving it plenty of gas. I was in second gear and cruising along nicely when it stopped.

No 5 o'clock tea for me when it cut out. It stopped halfway down a very long and very dark lane with no lights and a bit of rain!

Ok, when it cuts out, there's no spark. If I leave it for a minute, then it will fire up but only for a few seconds before cutting out again.

I don't know if it's related but I have to keep the revs up high when switching on the lights otherwise it cuts out quickly. Also, the rear light wasn't working so I put a new bulb in and it blew immediately. Could these problems be related?

Coil or condensor maybe?
