The vibrations comes from a unbanlanced crankshaft. The result are bearings with too much tolerance. The next problem and result are the 2 points where is the engine fixed on frame (silent blocks).
crankshaft: You must split the complete engine!! and have a new one ore a regenerated one.
silent blocks: New parts are not available... huh.gif

I know its not a good message...

Thank you Norbert. thumbsup.gif

I was going to strip the engine anyway as I need to repair a bolt that a previous owner overtightened (it's the big bolt at the top, I think maybe for adding gearbox oil). Someone had previously glued it in, so now it will not come out. blink.gif I also wanted to inspect the condition of the inside and in particular the bearings. I have built VW engines before so I don't mind doing engine work. cool.gif

Anyway, do you know if the crankshafts sold through the DDRMoped shop are ok? I think I read somewhere that some reproduction parts are not of a very good quality.

Tom, I have here in my near an old little business, who`s repairing chrankshafts since 1492 laugh.gif Its "german handmade", "Kraut-handmade" laugh.gif
I can send you one of this, of course. The problem: I need your old one! (Crankshaft I mean... laugh.gif )

Send me a mail with your adress. The costs are 50 Euro ( I think hmm.gif this are 345 Pound Sterling laugh.gif )+ shipping cost.

laugh.gif Thanks Norbert. I may well take you up on this offer soon. thumbsup.gif

It seems I still have another problem to sort out though. cry.gif I got new new light bulbs yesterday and fitted them. I now have enginge AND lights! biggrin.gif Bad news is that STILL the engine cuts out after 5 minutes if I try to ride it. As soon as it begins to warm up, it cuts out and won't run again until it's cooled. I have read that this is usually down to the spark plug or too much resistance in the ignition system. More research to do. I worry I will never be able to get my Essi reliable enough for my trip in April. ph34r.gif

Tom, whenever: you can get a regenerated crankshaft from me.

I think you have a new electronic ignition inside your engine. hmm.gif And still the engine stops after a few minutes? hmm.gif
Do you have controled ( engine was stopped) the spark. Do you have after or not?

Hello Norbert. Sorry for the slow reply. I have been busy. laugh.gif

I ran out of time to get the Simson working reliably so I ended up buying a Yamaha FS1E and completed the adventure on that. cool.gif The Yamaha was fun but I sold it after the ride and decided to just keep the Simson. Unfortunately, life got in the way and it just stayed in a barn that I rent. I have since moved city, changed job, bought a flat and got married. Now the owners of the barn have asked me to move it. So I saw my Simson again last week and now want to get it working again. Whilst I was there, I couldn't resist spraying a little bit of fuel in the carb and seeing what would happen... It fired up and ran as if I'd only parked it up yesterday!

Now I need to move my Simson to my new flat. Big question, could I do this in my car? Can a Simson be layed down on its side? Or would the gearbox oil cause problems? Alternatively, I may have to dismantle the bike first, including removing the engine.

It's best to remove the engine. It's easy!
